How Dental Insurance Works
Dental insurance works just like any other insurance policy. When you agree to purchase, you sign a contract stating you will pay a monthly premium to the insurer. This guarantees you will have access to a wide range of benefits for one calendar year. Within these 12 months, you can take the necessary steps to improve your oral health while minimizing your out of pocket expenses.
Every plan, carrier, and policy are different, which is why your benefits, premium, annual deductible, and yearly maximum may look different than your neighbor or friend. Fortunately, many have a similar breakdown of benefits, although the coverage level may vary. You can expect it to look something like the following:
- 80-100% preventive care covered
- 70-80% minor restorative care covered
- 50-70% major restorative care covered
It is in your best interest to meet your deductible each year, especially if you discover you need a more costly procedure. By meeting your deductible, your dental insurance company takes on more of the financial responsibility of the services you receive. For example, if a root canal is considered a major restorative service, your insurance company will agree to pay anywhere between 50-70% percent of the total cost. Although you will be responsible for the remaining 30-50%, it is better than paying for the entire procedure in full.
What is the Different Between Dental and Medical Insurance?
Understanding the difference between medical and dental insurance isn’t too difficult. The easy way to remember is that dental is designed to prevent problems while medical is designed to address issues when they arise.
When looking at your dental insurance policy, you will notice there is a high level of coverage for preventive services. This is because your insurer wants you to take better care of your oral health in hopes you will be able to avoid any potential problems in the future.
While your medical insurance policy may agree to cover some or all of your general wellness exams, it is highly unlikely you will use your insurance coverage unless a problem occurs, and you need immediate medical attention.
In-Network vs. Out of Network
If you’ll look at your policy, you will notice there are different charges for seeing an in-network versus out of network provider. Why? Because there are significant advantages and benefits to seeing someone who is in-network. But what exactly does that mean?
In-Network Coverage
As an in-network provider for many PPOs, Dr. Sapienza has an agreement with various dental insurance companies to offer services at a set price. This ensures you receive only the best in dental care at the lowest, most affordable price.
Out of Network
Although it is highly recommended that you see an in-network provider, you do have the option of using us to care for your smile even if we are out of network. We file all the necessary paperwork and claims electronically, no matter if they are in-network or not. However, you should know that we do not participate with any DMO/HMO plans.
