Dentures are remarkable prosthetic appliances that have allowed countless patients to replace their lost teeth with beautifully lifelike restorations. However, the process of jawbone erosion that begins after tooth loss may make it difficult for patients’ mouths to support these appliances. Thankfully, a person who has gone without teeth for a long time may still be able to qualify for the treatment. Here’s a brief guide to how you may still be able to receive dentures if it’s been a while since you lost your teeth.

What Happens to the Mouth After Tooth Loss?

Briefly after a tooth is lost, the section of the jawbone that supported it begins to atrophy and recede. As the bone structure diminishes, it can pull the neighboring teeth out of alignment, which makes them more vulnerable to injury, decay, and loss. This can lead to a vicious cycle of further tooth loss, and it can eventually leave the jawbone so thin that the mouth takes on a shrunken and withered appearance. Eventually, this process may make it difficult for the mouth to support dentures.

Can I Still Get Dentures if My Jawbones Have Atrophied?

If you have gone several years without teeth, you may still be able to become an excellent denture candidate. In many cases, thin jawbones can be reinforced with bone grafts, giving them the strength they need to support dental restorations. Bone grafting works by making a small incision along the gumline and placing donated bone tissue along the jaw. Over several months, this donor tissue will integrate with your natural bone structure, and you can expect to be ready for dentures when the healing process is complete.

What Is the Process of Getting Dentures?

The process of getting dentures begins with a consultation with your dentist, during which they will carefully evaluate your oral health to determine the best way to replace your teeth. If you aren’t ready for dentures, they may be able to recommend an appropriate restorative treatment to get your jaw in suitable shape. Once you are cleared for the treatment, they will take precise measurements of your mouth and send the data to a trusted dental lab. Once your restoration is complete, you’ll try it on, receive any needed adjustments, and be sent on your way to enjoy your new smile.
